Programs for Schools

"Restitution is a philosophy of discipline that is based on intrinsic motivation. It was created by Diane Gossen and is based on William Glasser’s Control theory principles. Restitution helps students to develop self-discipline and helps teachers to become better managers and mentors. We learn to become the student or the teacher we want to be, even in difficult situations."

Restitution: Self-Discipline

In the Restitution approach, we think of discipline as learning and we guide children to begin to make decisions by thinking about the kind of person they want to be.  We teach students and parents that mistakes are how we learn. We help parents become managers of their children's behavior and at the core of the training is the importance of a positive, nurturing relationship between kids and parents.

We help parents recognize that all behavior is purposeful and is driven by internal needs. Our workshop provides tools and techniques to manage behavior by meeting needs and developing win-win solutions, rather than resorting to punishments and rewards.

The parenting tools are effective for children of all ages!

Children in Classroom
I was introduced to Restitution, a system of understanding and moderating the behavior of
children and young adults, while as an Administrator at the American Embassy School, New
Delhi. Meemie Kemper became our in-house guru, conducting workshops for teachers and
parents as the community adopted and became skilled in applying Restitution.
As a practitioner, I soon realized that we had moved from telling the youngsters what was wrong
with their actions to helping them understand the motivations that led to those behaviors. Simple
questions helped a student articulate their mistakes and then focus on what could have
prompted that action. Rather than assign a punishment, we asked the student to make a plan
for restitution -- a compensation for the action, whether to another person or in terms of his own
habits. The student’s dignity was preserved while he was empowered to “fix” the problem in an
appropriate way.

In my work in various local schools in New Delhi subsequently, I have introduced Restitution as
a new way to approach student behavior and class management. Typically adults would dismiss
a complaint or “quick fix” the issue with “All right, just stop it.” Teachers are now willing to listen
to students’ description of an event and help them find solutions -- rather than reprimanding,
threatening or assigning an often unrelated punishment.

Meemie Kemper’s long study and practice of Restitution have prepared her to continue sharing
this effective, logical and respectful approach to empowering young people to understand and
apply controls on their interactions with others.
